Registration under .ac.in, .edu.in and .res.in

ERNET India
is Domain Registrar for all the Educational and Research Institutes including
schools in India. It will register Domains at second and third level in
the following zones.

ac.in (Academic)
·
edu.in (Academic)
·
res.in (Indian
research institutes)
GENERAL
REGISTRATION POLICIES
The Domain names under
".IN" in the Zones edu.in, ac.in, res.in will be allocated as per the terms available
at http://www.registry.in
RESERVED NAMES
The government has
reserved a list of names for government and registry use. This list will be published
shortly.
Also domain names
like IIT, NIIT, IIM, NIT,IIIT etc. both in abbreviated form and expanded form will be
reserved for these organizations in all the zones i.e in, ac.in, edu.in res.in and
ernet.in
GUIDELINES
For Users who apply for registering
domain names under ".IN"
- Domain name should
be available. To check for availability click
- .IN domain names may
be between 3 and 63 characters in length.
- Only letters (A-Z
& a-z) , digits(0-9), and hyphens will be accepted in a domain name. Names cannot
begin or end with hyphens.
- Other special
characters like the underscore "_" , exclamation mark "!" etc are not
permitted.
- Domain names are
not case-sensitive.(i.e. you may use a mix of upper or lower case letters)
- www.company.ac.in
is not a domain name; www is actually, the name of a computer in the domain - company.ac.in.
- Contact information:
Registrants must provide true, accurate contact information. The following contact types
are required: Registrant, Administrative, Technical, Billing. As per standing policy, the
contact data will displayed in the .IN WHOIS, except for the Billing contact data, which
is not displayed.
- The
Administrative contact of the domain must be from the organisation/entity requesting the
domain name.
- Nameservers:
In order to appear in the zone file and resolve on the Internet, at least one (1) valid
nameserver must be associated with the domain name. The use of at least two valid
nameservers is highly recommended.
- It is
necessary to run domain name servers(DNS servers) for the domain being registered. These
servers provide the service for translating domain names to IP addresses for hosts in the
domain
- These name
servers may belong to either the organisation or the Internet Service Provider/Web Service
Provider(ISP/WSP).
- The ISP/WSP can be
located in ANY PART of the world.
- The name servers
can be located in ANY PART of the world.
- It is
recommended that there are at least two independent name servers(primary and secondary
name server)
- It is mandatory to
run atleast the primary nameserver for the domain.
- The name
servers must be up, permanently connected to the Internet, and configured correctly to
respond to DNS requests for the domain, before the application is submitted.
- Establishing
the primary and secondary name servers in physically separate locations and on different
networks is strongly recommended.
- Internationalized domain names (IDNs): The registry
plans to accept IDN registrations in the future, including IDN registrations
in Hindi, Tamil, and other Indian languages. Until further announcements,
no applications for domain names in internationalized script (including diacritical
marks) shall be accepted. Domains with hyphens in the third and fourth positions
will be rejected.
- The
registry has the authority to deny or suspend a registration if it conflicts
with the sovereign national interest or public order.

will be withdrawn for such period till the payment is received at ERNET India provided
all the conditions given above are satisfied.

DOMAIN
REGISTRATION CHARGES
Second-level
domains:
Rs 1250 per domain for one year and
Rs.
2250 per domain for two years
Third-level
domains : Rs 750 per domain for one year and
Rs 1350 per domain
for two years

Invoices
in respect of domain registration will be issued on the financial year basis i.e from 1st
April to 31st March of next year. For newly registered domains billing will be
done on Pro-rata basis for the first year.

The
Domain registration charges both for the new and renewal accounts will be collected in
advance in the beginning of the financial year.

Payment
